West Virginia’s property tax exemption for disabled veterans.
90%+ (P&T from service): homestead taxes refunded through a state credit. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, and how to claim it.

- At a 100% permanent & total rating
- A refundable state income-tax credit equal to the property tax you timely paid on your homestead, for veterans rated at least 90% permanently and totally disabled due solely to service-connected causes. You pay the county bill, then the state pays you back at tax time, even if you owe no income tax.
- Below 100%
- The credit threshold is 90%, unusually below-100%-friendly. Below 90%, the general $20,000 homestead exemption for residents 65+ or totally disabled may still apply.
- Income test
- None. The exemption does not depend on your income.
- Surviving spouses
- The statute centers on the disabled veteran; surviving-spouse continuation is limited, so confirm with the Tax Division before counting on it.
- How to apply
- Pay both halves of your property tax on time (before October 1 and April 1), then claim the credit with form DV-1 on your West Virginia income tax return, with VA documentation.
- Worth knowing
- Two catches: pay late and you lose the year's credit, and it is a reimbursement, so you still need the cash up front each half-year.
Before you count on this: exemption law changes by legislative session, and counties administer the details. Confirm current amounts and deadlines with your county assessor or the official source below. Figures on this page were checked July 16, 2026.

A property-tax exemption lowers the monthly payment a lender counts in your file, which can raise what you qualify for. Run your numbers with the exemption’s effect via the buying-power calculator (use the property-tax override in advanced options), and see the funding fee guide for the other big disability-related saving.
