South Dakota’s property tax exemption for disabled veterans.

100% P&T: first $200,000 of the home's value exempt. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, and how to claim it.

Checked against state sources · July 16, 2026

At a 100% permanent & total rating
An exemption of $200,000 of the full and true value of the dwelling (house, garage, and up to one acre) for veterans rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected cause (SDCL 10-4-40). Dwellings designed as wheelchair homes for paraplegic veterans are fully exempt.
Income test
None. The exemption does not depend on your income.
Surviving spouses
An unremarried surviving spouse can claim a $150,000 exemption on the same basis (SDCL 10-4-41).
How to apply
Apply through your county director of equalization by the local deadline (typically November 1 for the following year) with your VA rating documentation.
Worth knowing
The exemption doubled from $100,000 to $200,000; guides citing the lower figure are out of date. $200,000 covers most of a typical South Dakota home's value.

Before you count on this: exemption law changes by legislative session, and counties administer the details. Confirm current amounts and deadlines with your county assessor or the official source below. Figures on this page were checked July 16, 2026.

A property-tax exemption lowers the monthly payment a lender counts in your file, which can raise what you qualify for. Run your numbers with the exemption’s effect via the buying-power calculator (use the property-tax override in advanced options), and see the funding fee guide for the other big disability-related saving.
