Nebraska’s property tax exemption for disabled veterans.
100% service-connected: fully exempt, but you must re-file every year. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, and how to claim it.

- At a 100% permanent & total rating
- A homestead that is 100% exempt regardless of home value or income, for veterans drawing VA compensation for a 100% service-connected disability (Category 4 of Nebraska's homestead exemption). Paraplegic veterans or multiple amputees in a VA-contributed home are also fully exempt (Category 5).
- Below 100%
- Partially disabled wartime veterans and some surviving spouses fall into other homestead categories that are income-tested and value-capped; the county assessor can tell you which fits.
- Income test
- None at 100% service-connected. Income tests apply only to the partial categories.
- Surviving spouses
- Unremarried surviving spouses of qualifying veterans have their own category; those of service members who died on duty can qualify for the full exemption.
- How to apply
- File Form 458 with your county assessor between February 1 and June 30 every single year; VA certification is needed the first year and again in years ending in 0 or 5.
- Worth knowing
- The annual re-filing is the trap: the exemption lapses if you miss the June 30 deadline, even at a permanent 100% rating. Calendar it.
Before you count on this: exemption law changes by legislative session, and counties administer the details. Confirm current amounts and deadlines with your county assessor or the official source below. Figures on this page were checked July 16, 2026.

A property-tax exemption lowers the monthly payment a lender counts in your file, which can raise what you qualify for. Run your numbers with the exemption’s effect via the buying-power calculator (use the property-tax override in advanced options), and see the funding fee guide for the other big disability-related saving.
