Missouri’s property tax exemption for disabled veterans.
No general exemption: former POWs only, plus an income-tested credit. Here is who qualifies, what it covers, and how to claim it.

- At a 100% permanent & total rating
- Missouri has no property tax exemption for disabled veterans generally. The constitution fully exempts the homestead of a former prisoner of war with a 100% service-connected disability, and that is the only full exemption.
- Income test
- The separate Missouri Property Tax Credit (the 'circuit breaker') pays up to $1,100 on real estate taxes for qualifying seniors and 100% disabled veterans, with income limits around $30,000 (single) to $34,000 (married). Veterans 100% service-connected exclude VA payments from that income calculation.
- Surviving spouses
- The POW exemption is personal to the veteran. Surviving spouses of 100% disabled veterans may still qualify for the MO-PTC credit on their own income.
- How to apply
- For the credit, file form MO-PTC with the Department of Revenue at tax time. Former POWs apply through their county assessor.
- Worth knowing
- Bills to create a tiered disabled-veteran exemption died in the 2025 session, and a constitutional amendment (SJR 88) is pending in 2026. If you read that Missouri passed a 70%+ full exemption, that was a proposal, not law. Watch this one.
