At a 100% permanent & total rating
The Montana Disabled Veteran (MDV) program reduces the property tax rate on the home by 100%, 80%, 70%, or 50% depending on income, for veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected rating. At the lowest income tier the bill effectively goes to zero.
Income test
Yes, tiered: for 2025, full (100%) reduction up to roughly $48,152 income (single) or $57,781 (married), sliding to a 50% reduction near the caps of about $62,598/$72,229. Brackets adjust for inflation each year.
Surviving spouses
An unmarried surviving spouse qualifies with lower income limits (full reduction up to about $40,127).
How to apply
Apply to the Montana Department of Revenue (online or through a local field office) by April 15, with your VA benefit summary. You must live in the home at least seven months of the year.
Worth knowing
The income test makes this different from most 100% P&T states: higher-income veterans get a partial cut, not zero. Check the current year's brackets before counting on the full reduction.

Before you count on this: exemption law changes by legislative session, and counties administer the details. Confirm current amounts and deadlines with your county assessor or the official source below. Figures on this page were checked July 16, 2026.

A property-tax exemption lowers the monthly payment a lender counts in your file, which can raise what you qualify for. Run your numbers with the exemption’s effect via the buying-power calculator (use the property-tax override in advanced options), and see the funding fee guide for the other big disability-related saving.
